Buenos Aires, November 26 (NA) -- Lanús striker Lautaro Acosta retired from professional football tonight at the age of 37, following a 1-0 defeat to Tigre in the round of 16 of the 2025 Clausura Tournament. The attacker won six titles with the “Granate” club, the last of which was the South American Cup, which he lifted last Saturday, and, as reported by the Argentine News Agency, stated he is “in shock” after playing his last match. In total, Acosta played 429 matches for Lanús during his 16 years at the club and scored 60 goals. Being one of the greatest idols of the “Granate,” consecrated as the player with the most appearances for the club and even having a statue, Lautaro Acosta said farewell to professional football. The striker debuted for Lanús in 2006 and quickly earned a starting spot, being an important part of the 2007 Apertura Tournament that the club would win, the first local title in its history, until he was sold a year later to Spain's Sevilla, which paid 7.5 million euros for him. In any case, his time in Europe was short and not very fruitful. Acosta was a fundamental part of some of the club's best years, winning five titles in the 12 years since his return: the 2013 South American Cup, the 2016 First Division Championship, the 2016 Argentine Super Cup, the controversial 2016 Bicentennial Cup, and the recent 2025 South American Cup, in addition to being a finalist in another South American Cup and the Libertadores in 2017. In addition to his sports career, the life of “Laucha” was shaken in 2023 with a complaint filed by his ex-partner for “physical, verbal and psychological violence and death threats,” which resulted in a 300-meter perimeter restriction, although it did not prevent him from continuing his football career. In an emotional moment, Acosta defined Lanús as his “home,” said he feels a mix of “joy and sadness,” assured he is “in shock,” thanking the fans “eternally for so much love,” his teammates, leaders, and family. He played for the Seville team until 2010, having difficulty securing a position due to his recurring injuries, and had two loans, to Spanish Racing de Santander and to Boca, where he did not score goals in 22 matches, until he became a free agent and returned to Lanús. It was at that moment that he began to write his golden chapter at the club.
